Moving Checklist

When you’re getting ready to move into a new home, it’s normal to feel like you have a never-ending to do list. But don’t panic – Just use this handy moving checklist to help you stay on track and minimize your stress ahead of time.

1. Declutter your current place

Feeling overwhelmed about packing up your entire place is understandable, but the simplest way to make things easier on yourself is to get rid of unwanted and unneeded belongings. While it might be tempting to skip this step, you’ll save yourself both time and money if you declutter your current place ahead of time.

2. Pack smart

Even if your move in day is still a couple of months away, try packing at least one box a day in the meantime so you’re not crunched for time at the last minute. You should also make sure you’re packing with a purpose – don’t put kitchen supplies and bedding in the same box, for example. Keep things organized and make sure you pack an “open first” box full of necessities for your first day, too!

3. Set up your new utilities

Your first day in your new home should be spent celebrating, not stressing because you don’t have running water or heat. Whether you’re setting up new utilities or transferring your current ones, make a plan for each service – including electricity, gas, water, trash pick-up, internet, and cable – at least a three weeks before you move in.

4. Update your address

It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos of moving, but don’t forget to formally change your address and forward your mail. You can do so online or at your local post office. Additionally, you should inform your employer, insurance company, bank and credit card companies, and any other organizations of your new address as well.

5. Communicate

Communication is key, so make sure you stay in touch with everyone involved with your move. Whether that includes your mortgage team, real estate agent, home builders, or moving company, try to stay in regular contact with everyone to make sure you’re on the same page about any meetings, dates, costs and fees, or other expectations.

There’s no doubt that moving can be a lot of work, but if you save this checklist and follow these simple steps, you’ll be on the right track to a smooth and stress-free transition.
